If you want to use Squidoo to promote your website or products that you sell, then you will want to make sure that your are optimising how the search engines will view your Squidoo lens (page).

The Google ads placed on your site are done so automatically by Squidoo, so you have no control over these.  This is how Squidoo makes its money as they do not charge people for its services.  Anyone can then click on one of the ads shown and leave your lens this way.

There are however, some things that you can manage on your Squidoo lens.  It is up to you which keywords you use to show on Google.  This is a proactive way of making sure the search engine spiders visit your page.  Three percent is the optimal keyword density you should use on your site.

When you add keywords to the lens, be sure to bold them in a couple of instances so that the search engine knows you are placing relevance on these words.  There are also other ways of highlighting keywords in the text and one of these is to italic the words.  Your chosen keyword should also be placed in bold once at the beginning of your lens content and once at the end.

Another way to ensure your lens is attracting Google for the right keywords is to use the keyword in the title and the URL.  Using hyphens and not underscores when the keywords in the url have to be broken up is the best method.  Also, it is a great idea to make sure you link all your lenses on the blog roll, which makes the task of Google finding the sites easier.

One of the most important things to ensure is that you get a lot of back links to your lens.  To get back links from other peoples lenses, you should leave significant posts on their lenses.  Try and use most, if not all, of the above pointers and you will see your lens rising in the rankings.
